The American Chronic Pain Association (ACPA) back in 2001 declared September as Pain Awareness month. During this time, various organizations will work to raise awareness to issues in pain and pain management.
Pain is the body’s natural warning signal that something is wrong and needs to be fixed. Chronic pain is defined as any ongoing pain which has persisted for longer than six months and adversely affects a person’s well being. Chronic pain can be triggered by a previous injury that has healed or there could be no trigger at all. Some of the most common forms of chronic pain are headaches, arthritis, neck pain, and lower back pain.
Those suffering can have physical side effects including tense muscles, limited mobility, reduced energy, or a lack of appetite, as well as mental side effects including depression, anger, and anxiety.
It is estimated that nearly 100 million Americans experience chronic pain, more than those with diabetes, heart disease, and cancer combined. Chronic pain is the number one reason Americans access the healthcare system and is the leading cause of disability. As a result, chronic pain has cost the American healthcare system up to $635 billion annually.
Along with the economic cost, chronic pain has been a contributing factor the Opioid Crisis. Patients with a higher than average self-rated pain score were prescribed opioids to help relieve the pain and many became addicted as a result. While pill mills have been shut own, counterfeit pills have only continued to take advantaged of addicted patients hoping to stop the pain. None drug related therapeutics have been developed as a result in order to replace opioid medication to prevent further addictions from developing.
